Shaun Slaughter

slaughter
Shaun Slaughter is a DJ from Sacramento who has been at the decks for more than nine years. With about six years of mixing under his belt this boy is sure to stick it to the beat. He runs a few night clubs in Sacramento(Lipstick, Vicious) and even has a residency at club night Nouveau in New York City. The DJ’s and musicians that he’s shared turntables with is too extensive to list, and he has won numerous awards for his talents.

His mixes are not your ordinary remixes. They don’t stray too much from the original song, yet still make most of these older songs sound new and refreshing. It’s good to hear someone pulling off original material with just hands and records. Not only is he not a laptop DJ(no offense) but he has a great personality and he “loves fucking music.”

Check this guy out if you see him on the bill and go read his blog here, where you can download many of his mixes for free. This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

If you are in San Francisco go check him out for Club Loaded at the Rickshaw Stop with Nightmoves(Kitsune) and DJ’s Omar, Audrock, and Ricky Hailey on Friday February 2nd.

Gameboy / Gamegirl + Miami Horror

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Stop it Austalia. You would think they’d be done by now, but… here’s Gameboy/Gamegirl. Gameboy/Gamegirl sounds like an ode to Spank Rock but with that big party Australia twist. Whatever. “Sweaty Wet/Dirty Damp” is gonna get a lot of play at camp BIGSTEREO. I only wish there was more…

Big ups to 20jazzfunkgreats for pointing this track out. They’re totally on the money with this one:

Miami Horror

And then check out Miami Horror. I’m in love with everything on this guy’s MySpace… which says a lot considering there’s a f’ing Tegan and Sarah remix.

Like shockwaves across the Internet: RIP Disco D. The world lost a great producer. You will be missed.

Infants + Audioporno

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

New Audioporno remix!! This time Audioporno has worked magic on the Infants’ “Firetruk.” Definitely a lighter, dancier take on the original. Good stuff…

Infants - “Firetruk” (Audioporno remix) (mp3)

I posted the original track this past summer. But here it is again in case you missed it the first time…

Chicks On Speed

cos
I apparently completely lost it and totally missed this song. Chicks On Speed better be working on some new material. This gets me excited.

Here you go, the girls that released one of the craziest records in years with ‘Press the Spacebar’ are back to their dance roots.

Is it already cliche to write a song about MySpace?

Kelis + Cee-Lo

Kelis and Cee-Lo - “Lil’ Star” (YouTube)

It’s The Money Shot brings us Kelis’ latest video for “Lil’ Star.” Kelis has been trying to convince us since her debut album that she is from another planet. Her costume in this video might prove it. Good news for Kelis because not only does it work for space travel, but it can also be used as a flotation device. Or if she gets lost in The Woods, it will capture her body heat so she doesn’t freeze to death at night. The video itself is simple, but totally one hundred percent endearing. Try not to love it. Cee-Lo casted as the universe is a nice touch.

It’s The Money Shot also brings us links to Kelis’ entire videography. Nice.

And while we’re talking about other blogs: Go to Missingtoof to get that Presets/Hung Up mashup. It’s the hottest track ever. Ever.

Metronomy - “Trick Or Treatz” (YouTube)

The dancing badgers in Metronomy’s “Trick Or Treatz” video are pretty damn cool — but why the click lights? The video itself seems a bit of a derivative of the Goldfrappish anamorphic human-animal hybrid thing, but stands pretty well on its own. It always helps to have a pretty damn good track backing the visual.

Thyne Eyes

thyne
Thyne Eyes was created less than a year ago so their sound is incredibly fresh and they have yet to even play a live show. Ed UFO! is joined by his good friends Chris Echo and David Dubois. Chris Echo has been around in the Drum N’ Bass scene for years, establishing himself as a big producer of the genre. David Dubois is originally from New York and exported to San Diego and now San Francisco which they all claim as their home, lucky me!

I ran into Ed(UFO!) at a local bar/club here in the city and we talked quite a while about the band, the sound, and how music is changing as we speak. Ed started off as a Drum N’ Bass DJ and did quite well for himself. He then got introduced, as we all did, to the whole “Electroclash” scene and started experimenting with more rock sounds in his sets. It all went up hill from there. I have heard this guy spin and he sure knows how to mix it up and make the people dance.

The album for Thyne Eyes is in the works, and after taking a listen I can honestly tell you that it is going to blow up. Their sound is something that I haven’t heard in quite a few years. They bring emotion back into music and yet still make you want to dance. It is not your ordinary dance album. If their sound doesn’t make you feel sexy and classy, I don’t know what will.

George Brazil

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

I’m not a fan of Space Cowboy’s “Egyptian Love.” It’s just a little too… much. But: Self described as “lo-fi fratrave”, George Brazil has created a welcoming twist on the original. Extra points for not using that cheesy Egypt sample.

SoftLightes

SoftLightes

Exciting track!!! What does Daft Punk sound like done by an indie pop band? SoftLightes’ “The Robots In My Room Were Playing Arena Rock” sounds like an ode to Discovery and totally is the unexpected twist on the bands debut, Say No To Being Cool - Say Yes To Being Happy.

SoftLightes - “The Robots In My Room Were Playing Arena Rock” (mp3)

I had a couple complaints about the band’s EP… at moments it was very, very uneven. Say No To Being Cool - Say Yes To Being Happy is uneven too, but the difference is on their full length the SoftLightes have the room to make the unevenness work. The track sequence is smart so you are never left feeling like you’re listening to a compilation of five different bands. Even though… you easily could be listening to five different bands. This is definitely a daring approach to a debut album, and might polarize more conservative listeners. Releasing a more focused album might be a smarter choice, but then again — they’re not committed to one sound. And — they’re so good at everything that they do that in the end it doesn’t really matter. I guess.

I’m babbling.

I don’t know what I expected from Say No To Being Cool - Say Yes To Being Happy. I did think I might be dissapointed, but I was pleasantly surprised. And in love. Ya’ll need to love this before Zach Braff decides to use the SoftLightes in a movie and plays it out. Totally. In stores: February 13, 2007.

Ssion

Ssion - “Street Jizz” (YouTube)

“Street Jizz” is the new-ish video from Ssion. Not exactly epic or even much different from anything else they’ve done in the past five years — but certainly amusing. The track itself is a little easier on the ears than previous work… but in a kinda obvious way. No?

Ssion totally blipped off my radar for a while so I’m glad to see they’re still around and creating.

Panther

Panther

Obvious Justin Timberlake comparisons aside, we suspected that Panther would sound better in the studio than on stage. Not that we don’t admire the thing he does live, but… he actually sounds impressive on his new album, Secret Lawns. Of course, Panther still rides dangerously close to being a joke, but if his act ends up falling that way, at least there is some meat to it all.

It’s The Money Shot is back! And he’s hosting a remix contest for Yo Majesty. More info there. I know some of you have talent so you should totally enter.
