The Valentinos

Australia owns the dirtiest sounds in the world. Proof is in this remix: The Valentinos’ “CCTV” (Bang Gang vs. Van She Tech Remix).

I’ve been pumping this remix out for a few weeks… like total repeat non-stop play. To be straight up with you guys: I’ve wanted to be selfish and keep it all for myself. Some tracks are just too good, and I don’t want the world to know. I want to be selfish!

It’s like this track has been thrown in a blender and glued back together. Dirty, dirty guitars — you don’t know if it is starting or stopping. I could seriously listen to this song all day. It’s like everything I want in music right now.

The Valentinos - “CCTV” (Bang Gang vs. Van She Tech Remix) (mp3)

Who The Hell? has a bit more on The Valentinos including a track from their new ep, Damn and Damn Again. Not to create a gross exaggeration, but The Valentinos should be the next big Aussie band that you will all be loving.

half anglo stuff for the frenchies
half french dope for the others,
download all and get your skates one.

1) from the klaxons' galaxy

a) CRYSTAL CASTLES
a v. young super hot girl, a boy, toronto, a 7eleven, an atari computer, electrocutions and children. on super hyped up label MEROK, the NME said this shit is like "a Gameboy having a nervous breakdown", et c'est pas faux. et c'est pas mal, non plus.

Crystal Castles - No Skin
Crystal Castles - xxzxczxme

b) DEAD KIDS
the dead kids are amazing, i advice you place your bets on them. they're kind of our cousins d'angleterre. people tell me they litteraly kill it live, i trust, i wish. FLUORIDE FEVER.

Dead Kids - Fear And Fluoride
Dead Kids - The Dead Wife Pills

ces enculés d'anglo ne sont pas les seuls a faire de la musique vener check and see.

2) il y a pas que ed banger dans la vie

a) YUKSEK
oh god. if i wasn't only an intern i'd sign him right away, you hear me benoit. his live shows are freaky, his music is candy for the ears, and he is himself beautiful. how fortunate! there's so many things that are going to be out soon that i won't list any, find it for yourself. come to paris on sept 14th as well to check him out alongside other project KLANGAGE and friend TACTEEL.

Yuksek - Break Ya

b) GENTLEMEN DRIVERS
let's get to the point : the GD are my new favorite-people-ever. Pharrell posted the cutest-remix-ever a while ago, that they did for their friend CRAIZ (WHOSE, incidentally, FUCKIN GOOD STREET TAPE is now available on the internet, buy it). Born 6 months ago, the GENTLEMEN DRIVERS know what's right. classy cars, tight attitude, a bit of mistery, banging tunes. this one in particular has been destroying my ears for the past few days. watch out for future live stuff, i can't bear to wait, my panties neither.

Gentlemen Drivers - Mass Damper

et sinon...
-TRIPLE ZUT's J 'ai Envie makes me melt and all kinds of other things too, go listen.
-if you haven't done so already, download the Third Eye Mafia Re-fit of Atlantis to Interzone on 20 Jazz Funk Greats, it's jaw dropping.
- also go to Palms Out and get an okay remix of ADAM KESHER's new single, Modern Times.

Hey, I was like sitting around last night thinking, “What does the Internet need that it doesn’t already have?” Then I had a total nerd idea. How about a message board? Golly, there aren’t enough of those!

So this could totally take off and be hotter than your mom, or it could totally crash and burn. I’m just throwing the dice.

I spent like five minutes throwing it all together. It’s totally 100% beta, but if you guys use it I’ll make it a bit more fancy.

The Myrmidons

The Myrmidons

If you’ve read Greek myths or literature, you might know that the Mymidons were a race of people who were blindly and faithfuly loyal to their leader Achilles. I’m not much of a reader of Greek myths or literature though. I am an avid reader of Wikipedia… in all its infinite un-knowledge.

But all that aside, I am going to guess that the band The Myrmidons took their name from the Shangri-Las’ Myrmidons of Melodrama. Can we talk about the genius of that album title? The Shangri-Las are like basically saying they are loyal followers of melodrama. That is just one reason why The Shangri-Las are the best girl group of all time. Period.

So why do I have this wild theory that The Myrmidons’ chose their name after The Shangri-Las’ album title? Because The Myrmidons are dripping in a 60’s pop sound that would have Phil Spector jealous. You can’t help but notice that vocalist Lori Lindsay sounds a bit like Ronnie Spector. It is like a totally obvious connection.

Don’t worry though… The Myrmidons are not trekking into The Pipettes’ territory. Because unlike The Pipettes, The Myrmidons are not a one trick pony. I imagine The Myrmidons sound how The Ronettes or The Shangri-Las would sound now… like some thick vocals on top of some total pop with dirty guitar and faint hints of shallow electro.

Their fantastic track “Clap (See the Stars)” is about as good as it gets. Until a busier music blogger comes along, you’ll have to either stream it on their Myspace or buy it from iTunes.

Oh. And it should be mentioned: The Myrmidons include Lauren and Ted Ottaviano of 80’s group Book Of Love. Uh huh.

Planningtorock

Planningtorock feels like the love child of Matthew Barney and Björk… but like all grown up. I’m not saying that visually Planningtorock (aka Janine Rostron) reminds me much of Matthew Barney. Her music doesn’t remind me much of Björk either. But there is a master of art and free spirit link there: I imagine them all dressing up in cardboard outfits together and then making up fake accents or something else clever like that.

Planningtorock music and art seems totally intertwined, but I must admit I am drawn more to her visual work than her music. On her video page, Planningtorock has some totally mesmerizing kaleidoscope video work that should not be missed. Actually, after watching her video work, Planningtorock’s album, Have It All, begins to make a bit more sense. Planningtorock’s music actually sounds like a kaleidoscope… like it all melts and twirls together into an electronic masterpiece.

Planningtorock - “Have It All” (mp3)

Planningtorock will be touring with Peaches across Europe this September and October. She will also be the opening act for the Knife’s U.S. mini-tour this fall.

Planningtorock is also on Chloé and Ivan Smagghe new Kill the DJ mix, The Dysfunctional Family. The tracklisting looks like it should get your head thinking. Put it on your to do list.

UPDATE: the interview is now translated,
go ahead and read.

Questions by Pharrell
Answers by Yelle

ENGLISH:

Yelle’s EP as droped yesterday then. Let’s hope it gets successful so that she can give us more. go buy it, baby. By popular demand, here’s the interview, translated.

Q: how do you live the transformation from “myspace star” to cultural product for the masses?
A: I’m really happy, the cover is pretty, Disco D’s remix is perfect… I’m just glad to finally be able to propose an object, not only virtual stuff. Concretization, it’s called.

Q: The EP is only a beginning, what are the next steps in the Yelle takeover?
A: Live stuff. With GrandMarnier, we’re working on a set which should be ready by the autumn. I’m really excited. And then, surely, another EP, maybe an album. All this still needs to be decided with my label Source etc. But we’ll try not to be too slow now.

Q: How do you create the music with GM, do you write the texts first or does GM make the music beforehand?
A: GM produces a lot of stuff, he always has got some crazy tunes. We chose together what fits and we go. Sometimes texts are written in advance, sometimes it’s the melody that defines the rest. Really there’s no rules. Although in the final phase there’s a lot of going back and forth between the voice and the prod.

Q: are you going to be making stuff with other producers?
A: cuties like DatA or TEPR make really good stuff. For the moment though, it’s with GM’s beats that I’m more at ease. GM is more than a producer, he is a song writer as well. But it will happen, for sure, working with other producers.

Q: In the same way, would you like to invite people to sing with you?
A: Booba. Currently I’ve got an obsession with his new album, but I’m afraid he’s going to “deny the request”. Other than that, I’ve got a nice feeling with Alain Chamfort, I’d love him to compose a love song and sing with me… I’m going to meet him soon.

Q: the lyrics from your songs are often very lively, are you going to make some videos or do you want your public to imagine the situations by themselves?
A: Video, for sure. Whatever we do, it’ll be very detailed stuff, which won’t betray what people can imagine. It’ll only be full of tiny “add-ons” details.

At Fluokids we mostly like tops, and we wanna know if we’re right to love you…

Q: What are you 5 favorite recipes?
A: -Kouign aman (a full-on butter and sugar desert from Brittany)
-three chocolates muffins
-Port Goret mussels and fries (tomatoes, basil, and thyme)
-apricot and almond Tajine
-and all that’s composed of duck and potatoes

Q: your five favorite tracks atm?
A: -Booba/92 izi
-Justin Timberlake/My love
-Nelly Furtado/Maneater
-The Divine Comedy/Diva lady
-Sebastian/Ross ross ross

Q: the 5 insignificant things that you love?
A: -brushing my teeth (I always go beyond the advised 3 minutes)
-I love to cook but it’s not insignificant at all.
-smelling the behind of my French bulldog’s ears, it smells like “doudou” you see?
-verifying stuff in the dictionary
-deleting spam

Tender kisses to all the fluokids

A: Du live.

A: Booba.

A: -Booba/92 izi
-Justin Timberlake/My love
-Nelly Furtado/Maneater
-The Divine Comedy/Diva lady
-Sebastian/Ross ross ross

-supprimer mes spams

tendres bisous à tous les fluokids

Between all american big releases of this days, you musn't miss Outkast's new project. In an interview with Charlie Braxton for the Breakin-Records website, André 3000 talks about screenwriting, blues music, the Idlewild album of course, snap music and also club culture...

"We at a period right now where kids….girls and dudes in high school do everything for the club. We’re in a club culture where niggas wanna ride to the club looking good in their nice car. They want they rims looking good. And when they get to the club they wanna look fresh with their clothes and when they leave the club they wanna leave with a nice girl and they wanna drink Petrone and smoke and do all kinds of other stuff in the club."

...and the place of Atlanta in the game :

"(...) Ah man it’s funny how we just be talking about one thing that lead me into other song. We got a song on there called “Hollywood Divorce.” And it talks about exactly what you’re saying. I mean you gotta think back twelve years ago the South was laughed at. Now if you go to New York or you go to LA that’s all you hear on the radio. That’s all you hear. I mean it’s either snapping or clapping or trapping. It’s one of them.

Q: But it’s not just the music look at the culture. You see kid’s from New York dressing like us, dancin’ like us, hell they’re even using our slang, they’re ridin on 22s.

Andre: Yeah, it’s crazy. What I’m saying is usually whenever a Black thing started in the hood and it gets so big where Hollywood makes movies about it usually the Black people who made it they flip it and do something else because then it’s not their no more.

On Hollywood Divorce the chorus says it starts off like a small town marriage, Lovely wife, a life and a baby carriage. Now all the stars have care, success of course but it ends up in Hollywood divorce. And that what this is it all started off as some shit we used to do in high school –this southern shit, we didn’t know that it was gonna take off like it did. I mean TI he used to come by the studio. He used to come by Stankonia. He used to be rappin’. This was before he was even on, ya know. And it was all just some neighborhood shit. But now they’re making movies about our city man. Even though it missed the mark a lot, it really didn’t say what Atlanta was, but just for somebody to dish out money to make a movie about our city is good in and of itself. They made movies about New York….Beat Street and Wyldstyle and all of that. Now they making movies about this small place called Atlanta where the highest building was the Peachtree Plaza at one point (...)"

Roc

I don’t know much about Roc. Though after a listen to Dsico’s remix of “Sink A Bite Into Life” I feel like I should. He has worked some serious magic into their track. Roc seems to have a sort of dirty New Order sound… or maybe, dare I say, Berlin. Though not total retro-whatever, Roc is still interesting in a contemporary way. Karen Sheridan has an airy Alison Goldfrapp quality to her voice which lends itself perfectly to the music. Ace.

It is Friday! An exciting track to kick the weekend off with:
