Gameboy / Gamegirl + Miami Horror

Stop it Austalia. You would think they’d be done by now, but… here’s Gameboy/Gamegirl. Gameboy/Gamegirl sounds like an ode to Spank Rock but with that big party Australia twist. Whatever. “Sweaty Wet/Dirty Damp” is gonna get a lot of play at camp BIGSTEREO. I only wish there was more…

Big ups to 20jazzfunkgreats for pointing this track out. They’re totally on the money with this one:

Miami Horror

And then check out Miami Horror. I’m in love with everything on this guy’s MySpace… which says a lot considering there’s a f’ing Tegan and Sarah remix.

Whats New on Letterbox Records

Letterbox Records have made freely available two digital download singles to promote up and coming album releases.

The first single is by California Snow Story the band formed by David Skirving who was a founder member of Camera Obsura. Since their only single release, 2002's One Good Summer EP the band has undergone line up changes and David was joined by Sandra who was previously a member of Spanish band Superété.

It's titled Suddenly Everything Happens and is a taster for the forthcoming album Close to The Ocean. It's a lovely little track and if the album maintains the quality of this download single then we are in for a treat indeed.

California Snow Story - Suddenly Everything Happens

Two ex members of the band formed The Hermit Crabs who I wrote about here.

The second single is from Morning Bride who are based in my home borough of Hackney. The line up includes two American girls and three English musicians who apparently come from English seaside towns beginning with B. This isn't indie pop at all but is a mix of folk , blues and Alt-Americana that is quite popular with bands on labels such as Track & Field and Truck Records at the moment.

Time Delay is taken from the forthcoming Lea Valley Delta Blues album that is due for release on February 12th 2007. It's country music for the inner city.

Disco D

Like shockwaves across the Internet: RIP Disco D. The world lost a great producer. You will be missed.

PPPönk

Here's a blast from the Icelandic underground past. I recently dug this CD out of my collection and realizing I had not listened to it in many years, I gave it a well deserved proper listening to, and it's a darn fun CD, so I wanted to share it with someone. Realizing I knew virtually nothing about the band I got the singer to answer a few questions, and without furter ado I present you with PPPönk (PPPunk).

The band started in 1997 with an exchange student named Benjamin Jay Kline, who studied in Flensborg High School. He had agreed to partake in the school's singing competition, with his own song. When the time came he decided to go to the movies instead and asked his "sister", Laufey, to sing it instead, to which she agreed. The school band had one Freyr Gígja on guitar and Guðni on drums, and their co-operation proved so fun that they decided to continue, and recruited Nonni on guitar and Bjössi on bass.

While waiting for the drummer on their first practice, a chap they knew named Kjartan was out walking his dog, and dropped in on a visit. He sat behind the drum-kit, counted in, and thus the band was fully formed.

The band had one popular song, called "Surferboy" which got on some charts, and was released on a compilation CD called "Drepnir". Then Freyr dropped out and Gísli Árnason took his place. The Sugarcubes' label Bad Taste got wind of them and released the CD PP. ep. also in 1997. Apart from this the band released a CD named "Hvað" (What). Their 15 minutes of fame came when they opened for Skunk Anansie in what was then Iceland's largest stadium.

The singer, Laufey, is now an actress and a model, Freyr is a reporter and Bjössi the bass player currently drums with Singapore Sling. PP. ep. is now nowhere to be found, but there's a slight chance that it may be bought digitally at tonlist.com.

i guess it's no more too hype to eat spiders this week, but rather slather your naked body with chocolate and wander around offering treats to people, OK FINE SOUNDS FUN I'LL HAVE A LICK.

having read the vice issue on girls on my way back from a lovely week-end in paris, covering a yet dormant killer flu (i'm probably dead by tomorrow just so you know i'm posting before so i dont leave you without good music to mourn my loss to), i've been a bit upset by some articles (excisision almost got me throwing up my sandwich, girl getting off to beating up, girl selling her poop ewww) and endeared by some others (not as interesting to list, really). girls are really amazing, and everyone should be reminded of that at least once a day. i mean : boobs! indulging in really old shameful dirty secrets! spending the night swooning over hundreds of blur's youtube comparing the awesome features of alex damon graham! i tell you : only a girl.

i used to not like girl singin so much, i used to hate remixes, how the world has changed. these three songs are remixes, these three songs feature girly vocals, these three songs are hott hott hott.

1) this one is not *too* new but so good, a rex the dog remix for the swedish hot "more poppy than them you die" band the sounds. it was recommended by the lovely patrik north from the lovely music label SUMMER LOVERS UNLIMITED on his lovely blog el popo. since i am ill as fuck, i am allowed to be lazy, and copy/paste what patrik says about this track (also because it is very true and i couldn't agree more and rephrase this would be plagiarism and i'd rather quote than plagiarize) :

IF YOU ARE A DJ AND YOU DO NOT PUT THIS INTO YOUR SET IN THE NEXT MONTH OR SO THEN WE ARE NOT FRIENDS ANYMORE.

IF YOU ARE A GIRL WHO LIKES TO HAVE FUN YOU WILL SING ALONG TO THIS INTO A HAIRBRUSH WHEN YOU ARE GETTING READY TO GO OUT AND YOU WILL BE FIGHTING FOR SPACE IN THE BATHROOM MIRROR AND YOUR BEST FRIEND WILL HAVE CURLERS IN HER HAIR AND SHE MIGHT SHOVE YOU A LITTLE TOO HARD BUT THAT IS OK BECAUSE AFTER ALL SHE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND AND PLUS YOU ARE TOUGH.

IF YOU ARE AN UPTIGHT STRAIGHT DUDE WHO LISTENS TO RAP/INDIE/GENRE-TECHNO THEN YOU WILL NOT LIKE THIS AND NEED TO GO AWAY, BUT IF YOU ARE FUN OR GAY THEN IT'LL BE OK AND YOU WILL SMOKE SOME WEED AND DANCE TO THIS IN SOCKS AND BOXERS.

The Sounds - Tony The Beat (Rex The Dog Remix)

second, is an amazing soft sad fluttering remix done by the teenagers (signed to SLU! wooh!) for the pretty dudettes of au revoir simone. you probably have heard it on their myspace, and loved it, as you should, and here it is in good quality to take out on your ipod, because as you might have noticed, we're nice like that. let me remind you that teenagers are remixing like fire right now, for the likes of NYPC, thieves like us, van she etc, yeepee.

Au Revoir Simone - Fallen Snow (The Teenagers Remix)

third final point conclusion : woooh yet again a new van she tech exclusive remix! we missed this on the blog, it was a bit sad. but fear not for that a new phase of vst awesomeness is beginning here with soon : a remix of tiga (wonderfully strange and upbeat and uuuuugh gonna want more) a remix of utah saints (makes your eyes go wide, as wide as that msn smiley, you know the one, and makes your body shake like a killer flu does or maybe even more) a remix of mstrkrft (haven't heard this one aw booh) and more.
THIS ONE though screams cuteness by its every pore (if a song was a girl). it's a remix of a song by the aussie band teenager (no the no s), who just released their debut album "thirteen" you should buy it. go on their myspace to download the original, another little gem.

Teenager - Alone Again (Van She Tech Remix)

The Kid hail from Gothenburg, Sweden and unlike the majority of other Swedish bands featured on this site they are not inspired by C86 or jangle pop taking their cue from Joy Division and New Order instead.

Their later stuff is more influenced by the latter although with the female vocalist it is more reminiscent of The Other Two. Whilst this sort of music has gone around at least twice for an old 'un like me it may be well a breath of fresh air for the generation of today discovering 1980's influenced music for the first time.

Of the three tracks on offer I prefer the Joy Division inspired Kit Club Hotel.

The Kid - Kit Club Hotel
The Kid - Portion Control
The Kid - The Noble Art Of Jealousy

Infants + Audioporno

New Audioporno remix!! This time Audioporno has worked magic on the Infants’ “Firetruk.” Definitely a lighter, dancier take on the original. Good stuff…

I posted the original track this past summer. But here it is again in case you missed it the first time…

Sarah Bands - Live & Demo Tracks

Last August I ran a series of posting demos and live shows from a number of Sarah bands. I picked these up from a range of sources so thanks to whoever they originated from. The links on the original posts have since expired and following a number of requests here they are again:

Another Sunny Day - Demos (20mb)

When I first posted these demos Harvey Williams left a comment on the original post about the demos.

Haven't heard these demos for a while; some of them sound pretty uninspired. I guess that's why they never came out. Anyway, here's some recording dates... Eternal recorded august 1986; Her Friend & Who's To Blame (not the real title, can't remember what the real title is) recorded september 1988; I Want You recorded june 1986; It's OK If You Don't Love Me & The Boy From St Ives (a cover of a song by Penzance legends The Choughs) recorded feb 1987; What's Wrong...gosh, I'm not sure I remember... spring 1987, probably. All recorded on a Fostex x15; this is about as good as they ever sounded.

Brighter - Demos (23mb)
Brighter - Live 1991 (23mb)
Field Mice - Demos (54mb)
Field Mice - Live (78mb)
Field Mice - Radio Shows & Demos (104mb)

Where are you coming from ? We never heard of you and one day all these tunes are coming out, you are not signed on a label but you do remixes for Mstrkrft and Ashlee Simpson, how could this be ?

I started as a musician in a pretentious progressive rock-band throughout my earlier years, which I played bass guitar. The transition into electro was only natural. As for right now, I am practicing doing remixes/originals on my own, until I feel ready enough to approach a label (or a label feels ready enough to approach me, haha).

Are you a total bedroom producer or do you do dj mixes / live ? As you produce dance music, it's difficult not to imagine how this music would be received, so what the purpose of your music, at which moment
should it be played, for what kind of girl, what kind of clubs would you prefer your songs to be played in ?

Currently I'm only doing bedroom producing, because I don't have the resources to perform live, but hopefully that will change soon
;) ;) ;)

I'm making music because I've been inspired; electronica has made me excited about music again. It's helped me discover that adding a little bit of cliche in what you make is what makes music interesting, rather than trying to create something completley new, I'd rather rework the cliche into something fresh. I guess in that sense, I'm making music to try and inspire those like I have been. Ideally, I want my music played at the most typical, frat-boy filled club in town, because there would be nothing more satisfying then hearing 40 boys singing along to Ashlee Simpson unknowingly.

In the music universe what special friendships do you have, who are your models? what do you do in life except music?

Discodust has been really nice to me, supporting me from the beginning, and other various blogs (Shot Callin, Slutty Fringe, ON-OFF, TTY). Musically, my models have been Teki Latex (the happiest music on earth), the EdBanger team, melodramatic vocoder rock (the Midnight Juggernauts and All Night Dance Party, and those I've listened to before I even understood what electronica was (Daft Punk, Vitalic, The Chemical Brothers, Out Hud). Other than music, I am attending university and shopping a lot.

What are the 5 greatest mouths you know?

I feel like it would be too easy to insert a fellatio joke here, so I'm just going to answer straight up in a very particular order.
1. Stephen Tyler
2. Hilary Duff (who I'm dying to remix)
3. Dikembe Mutombo
4. Woody Allen's Wife/Daughter
5. Tony Blair

Anglo Svensk Promotions & Säkert!

Anglo Svensk Promotions has been set up by Cath English who was one of the promoters of the Sweden Made Me club night. Like the club it's operations centre around Brighton and it's aim is to bring Swedish artists over the UK to play.

The next night is Sunday 4th February 2007 with Lisa Li-Lund (Herman Dune) playing. If you live in Brighton I'm not sure what excuse you have for not going! Details of future events can be found here.

Säkert! is the band put together by Annika Norlin aka Hello Saferide. Joining her are members of Vapnet, Laakso and Isolation Years. Whilst I am not that great a fan of Hello Saferide based on this exclusive track from Swedes Please I can say I can say I am well taken with her new project which sees the band singing in their native Swedish.
